The Potential Role of Medicinal Mushrooms in the Prevention and Treatment of Gynecological Cancers: A Review

2019

A review of scientific information about the potential role of medicinal mushrooms in the prevention and treatment of gynecological cancers, human immunodeficiency virus, and human papillomavirus infections is reported here. The results of in vivo and in vitro experiments on 16 different species of Basidiomycetes and three Ascomycetes, which possess chemopreventive potential and are effective in clinical application in combination with chemotherapy, are also discussed. Medicinal mushroom extracts confirm an evident efficacy on the reduction of tumor cell proliferation and side effects in patients with gynecological tumors who are undergoing chemotherapy treatments. This review, the first on…

Uptake of hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy in carriers of pathogenic mismatch repair variants:a Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database r…

2021

Purpose: This study aimed to report the uptake of hysterectomy and/or bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) to prevent gynaecological cancers (risk-reducing surgery [RRS]) in carriers of pathogenic MMR (path_MMR) variants. Methods: The Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database (PLSD) was used to investigate RRS by a cross-sectional study in 2292 female path_MMR carriers aged 30-69 years. Results: Overall, 144, 79, and 517 carriers underwent risk-reducing hysterectomy, BSO, or both combined, respectively. Two-thirds of procedures before 50 years of age were combined hysterectomy and BSO, and 81% of all procedures included BSO. Risk-reducing hysterectomy was performed before age 50 years in 28%, 25%,…

Uterine microbiome—low biomass and high expectations†

2018

AbstractThe existence of different bacterial communities throughout the female reproductive tract has challenged the traditional view of human fetal development as a sterile event. There is still no consensus on what physiological microbiota exists in the upper reproductive tract of the vast majority of women who are not in periods of infection or pregnancy, and the role of bacteria that colonize the upper reproductive tract in uterine diseases or pregnancy outcomes is not well established. Despite published studies and advances in uterine microbiome sequencing, some study aspects—such as study design, sampling method, DNA extraction, sequencing methods, downstream analysis, and assignment …

Gynecologic cancers in pregnancy: guidelines based on a third international consensus meeting

2019

We aimed to provide comprehensive protocols and promote effective management of pregnant women with gynecological cancers. New insights and more experience have been gained since the previous guidelines were published in 2014. Members of the International Network on Cancer, Infertility and Pregnancy (INCIP), in collaboration with other international experts, reviewed existing literature on their respective areas of expertise. Summaries were subsequently merged into a manuscript that served as a basis for discussion during the consensus meeting. Treatment of gynecological cancers during pregnancy is attainable if management is achieved by collaboration of a multidisciplinary team of health c…

How do age and social environment affect the dynamics of death hazard and survival in patients with breast or gynecological cancer in France?

2021

Several studies have investigated the association between net survival and social inequalities in people with cancer, highlighting a varying influence of deprivation depending on the type of cancer studied. However, few of these studies have accounted for the effect of social inequalities over the follow-up period, and/or according to the age of the patients. Thus, using recent and more relevant statistical models, we investigated the effect of social environment on net survival in women with breast or gynecological cancer in France. The data were derived from population-based cancer registries, and women diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer between 2006 and 2009 were included. We …

Pyelotransverse pyelocolostomy: an alternative method for high urinary diversion in patients with extended bilateral ureter damage.

1991

After previous radiation due to pelvic malignoma or after multiple operations, the ileal conduit as well as sigmoid conduit are associated with an increased rate of complications. In these patients, the middle and distal ureter often cannot be considered for reimplantation due to fibrosis. High anastomosis to a bowel segment which is undamaged proves favorable. The transverse colon, conveniently situated in the cranial abdomen, is close enough to the kidneys for such a high anastomosis and is mostly spared from irradiation. In cases where severely damaged ureters forbid connection to a normal transverse conduit, we performed a pyelotransverse pyelocolostomy with high anastomosis of the bowe…

Combination therapy with pegylated liposomal doxorubicin and carboplatin in gynecologic malignancies: A prospective phase II study of the Arbeitsgeme…

2007

Abstract Objective. A multicenter non-randomized phase II study was initiated to evaluate tolerability and efficacy of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in combination with carboplatin in gynecologic malignancies. Methods. One hundred forty women with recurrent or advanced endometrial ( n =31), cervical or vaginal cancer ( n =31), uterine sarcomas ( n =11), or recurrent platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer ( n =67) received six courses of PLD 40 mg/m 2 and carboplatin (AUC 6) every 28 days. Results. Hematological toxicities with NCI-CTC grade 3/4 were anemia in 8%, thrombocytopenia in 14%, neutropenia in 24%, and febrile neutropenia in 2% of 652 cycles. Grade 3/4 non-hematological toxiciti…

Quality of Life in Women After Pelvic Exenteration for Gynecological Malignancies: A Multicentric Study

2018

Objectives This retrospective, multicentric study investigates quality-of-life issues and emotional distress in gynecological cancer survivors submitted to pelvic exenteration (PE). Methods The Global Health Status scale of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30; the EORTC QLQ-CX24 (CX24), and EORTC QLQ-OV28 questionnaires were administered at least 12 months from surgery only in women with no evidence of further recurrence after PE. Statistical analysis was performed by the analysis of variance (for repeated measures. Results Ninety-six subjects affected by gynecological malignancies receiving PE were enrolled in the s…

A questionnaire assessing women's care needs related to gynaecological cancer screening: development of the GCSCNS.

2013

Abstract Objective To identify women's care needs concerning cancer screening and to develop an instrument suitable for measuring them – the Gynaecological Cancer Screening Care Needs Scale (GCSCNS). We hypothesized that it is possible: (a) to explore care needs and to develop reliable subscales of them, (b) to rank these needs in order of importance, and (c) to detect determinants of these needs (age, social status, marital status, health locus of control) and these need scores. Study design A questionnaire was developed based on the relevant literature, interviews conducted with gynaecological patients, and a consultation with 18 experts. The questionnaire listed 58 items addressed to phy…

The combined operative and radiotherapeutic treatment (CORT) of recurrent tumors infiltrating the pelvic wall: First experience with 18 patients

1992

CORT is a new radiosurgical treatment concept for patients with recurrent gynecologic malignancies infiltrating the pelvic wall. The operative part consists of (i) staging laparotomy; (ii) maximum debulking of the tumor from the pelvic wall and exenteration of infiltrated central pelvic organs; (iii) implantation of brachytherapy guiding tubes on the residual tumor/tumor bed at the pelvic wall; (iv) pelvic wall plasty with muscle and omentum flaps to create a protective distance between the tubes and the pelvic hollow organs and to induce therapeutic angiogenesis; and (v) surgical reconstruction of bowel, bladder, and vulvoperineovaginal functions. Radiation is given postoperatively as frac…
